In the SNCF Réseau's European call for tenders, TPS competed successfully against numerous other systems. Since 2009 already, the French infrastructure manager has been using HaCon's Train Planning System to perform planning studies on network capacities.

Within the framework of the "SIPH" project (Système Industriel de la Production des Horaires), the integration of TPS aims at improving rail network efficiency and modernizing timetable and train path management in France. Most importantly, "SIPH" strives to ideally meet the needs of railway companies and, consequently, their end customers. Also, the network utilization in France shall be maximized with currently about 6.3 million train paths a year.

Bernard Clarissou, head of service transformation in SNCF Réseau's capacity and train path department, is well aware of the upcoming business challenges that include opening up to competition, the growing needs of rail operators in terms of service quality, the railways authorities' requirements as well as the European standardization guidelines. "Today, TPS is the most successful and efficient solution available on the market, thanks to its integrated capacity management functionalities," said Clarissou.

TPS will be implemented for about 650 train planners at SNCF Réseau – HaCon is realizing this major project together with its partners Sopra Steria Consulting, who is managing the consortium, and Cereza / Groupe Talan.

In order to strengthen HaCon's presence in France, a team of four consultants recently moved into a new office in Paris. "We strive to optimally support our French customers and offer them an even quicker service on location," said Werner Sommerfeld, Managing Director at HaCon. "Our new branch office is another important step for us in reinforcing international presence."

In addition to TPS, several other HaCon modules are used in France: Both the HAFAS-based real-time journey planner available on sncf.com and "SNCF Maps" are popular with travelers. The interactive live timetable is the first application in Europe that precisely localizes and displays trains throughout France by means of both GPS and infrastructure information.

Dani Sarkis, an experienced railway specialist and HaCon's Head of France, said: "Like many other European and international railway markets, the French one is currently in an intensive process of modernization. This offers HaCon a unique opportunity for development. Whether TPS or HAFAS, our range of products is intended to even accelerate this modernization process and deliver real value and innovation to our customers."
