Greener Terminals with Smart Tools

Today, intermodal terminals face new challenges due to rising energy costs and the need for “green” transport chains. Remaining competitive requires high efficiency regarding energy consumption and costs in general. EcoHubs deals exactly with this issue. A central part of the project is the “Intermodal Terminal Eco-Efficiency Calculator” (ITEC) that has been developed by PE International, HaCon and KombiConsult. ITEC is the first tool that enables precise process-related calculation of both the energy consumption and the CO2 footprint of individual transfer terminals. This reveals possible savings and allows for evaluating and optimizing improvement measures. Additionally, the EcoHubs partners develop models for cooperation and concepts for communication that factor in all terminal parties involved and aim at both improving capacity utilization of terminal and logistics resources and supporting the development towards so-called Green Hubs.
