TIGER/TIGER DEMO

Relieving Ports and Strengthening Intermodal Transport with Innovative Concepts

An implementation-oriented R&D project, TIGER was aimed at improving efficiency and performance of combined transport (CT) when connecting seaports with the hinterland. One main focus was the development of innovative port and hinterland concepts. For instance, the project partners analyzed how inland terminals (so-called dry ports) can relieve maritime facilities and how such plant layouts have to be designed. Moreover, they tested procedures for efficiently connecting smaller and medium-sized CT terminal locations according to rail-rail transfer concepts, e.g. by means of megahubs. The follow-up TIGER DEMO project transferred the results to corresponding demonstrators that allowed testing the TIGER findings in terms of market influence and cost effectiveness under actual conditions.
